1. Lindsay Phillips - Varning (Departed Sounds)

I (embarrassingly belatedly) got myself a copy of Lindsay’s debut record “Varning” last week. And my God, it’s a goodie. Many of the tunes I was already familar with, both from earlier demos and seeing him perform them live; but the recordings featured on ‘Varning’ take them to another level altogether.

I was actually somewhat startled listening to the album. Being so used to LP’s live arrangements, and the previous recordings; hearing the album I was quite taken aback at just how fantastic it sounds. ‘Aileen’ (one of the first songs of Lindsay’s I ever heard), now features a beautiful, rich reverb soaked male (presumably Lindsay) hum choir. They’re so deliciously full sounding that for a second I actually thought they were strings.

One thing I’ve always loved about Lindsay’s music, is just how minimalist it is. Being just one guy and an acoustic guitar; he’s got nowhere to hide (not that he needs to). Every performance is absolutely flawless. The recording wonderfully captures every small detail of Lindsay’s guitar playing, and every nuance of his exquisite baritone voice.

Rumour has it that Lindsay has a second album ready for release, and has almost completed a third. What a freak.

Please, buy this record. It’s wonderful, and Lindsay needs our support.

Available on lusty beautiful 12” vinyl, or as a high quality download.
